Perth’s Best Cafes

When you start discussing coffee as if it were a wine you know your appreciation of coffee has moved to a new level. Luckily Perth has many cafes where you can happily have those conversations.

If this sounds like you, clearly you've been inspired, moved by the bean, as it were.

If it doesn't, don't fret - it's never too late to become a card carrying member of the coffee loving cafe fraternity.

If you're not sure where to get your next fix, relax for they've done the, er, hard work for you.

Whether you're after a siphon, a latte, a single origin bean or a pour over, you'll find some love in this list of cafes.

These cafes take their coffee seriously, they are inspired to bring the best to you. Just don't ask the barista to add a dash of caramel syrup. You'll no doubt be run out of town by your new-found coffee mafia friends faster than you can say "Ethiopian Yirgacheffe".

At woollylatte's Melanie and Linda have tried to create a cosy, comfortable, relaxing, inspiring, funky, friendly atmosphere. In the cafe there is the popular sofa and some unusual cosy chairs (shaped perfectly for knitting!) that make it possible to sit for hours and be totally comfortable.

Siena's Pizzeria & Caffe

500 Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley

-31.9379963914468 115.869927406311

Siena’s has fast built a name for itself. Normally when we think chain, we don’t think good things. However, Siena’s has managed to duplicate itself without the soullessness of a franchise. Let’s start with breakfast. It’s hard to go past the buttermilk pancakes with mascarpone, but for the savoury-toothed they do their eggs well and the portions are big. There’s also kid’s pancakes with gelato. However, Siena’s really gets going come evening and it’s a favourite with families. Good wood-fired pizzas and a huge range of pastas and mains. A well rounded and reasonably priced wine list tops it off.

Elixir Coffee Specialists

45a/145 Stirling Hwy, Nedlands

-31.9803417700871 115.796842575073

There is no doubt that coffee is the elixir of life for many and here at Elixir Coffee Specialists, they are well ahead of the game. This chic, well designed café has a particularly loyal following which is the ultimate proof that these baristas are dedicated to making great coffee. Of course, they roast on site and their house blends are sublime. They have a good selection of single origins too. Food-wise it’s a small, but well balanced menu. Breakfast includes muffins, muesli and bacon and eggs on crusty white bread, and lunch sees a range of open sandwiches.

Epic Espresso

5/1297 Hay Street, West Perth

-31.9488098819477 115.841402113438

Luckily most of the new speciality coffee café’s that are springing up are run by people who are passionate about coffee. Not only are we seeing fierce competition between baristas, but also between coffee shop owners who are committed to researching where and how to get the best beans. The crew behind Epic are a dedicated team of purists indeed, and while there has been a change of staff this is still a café that does consistent and reliable brews. The Belgian couveture mocha is rich, creamy and quite simply, to die for. Prices can be steep.

The Dancing Goat

Unit 3/142 Railway Rd, Cottesloe

This is a cosy, comfy café that is great for a laid-back late breakfast or lazy lunch. The surprise here is that you are also going to get a cup of the best coffee around. The baristas take their job seriously and it shows in their perfectly made latte’s and long blacks. The menu is simple with breakfast burritos, ham and cheese croissants as well as muesli and other breakfast staples. Lunch sees a good selection of bagels, salads and wraps. The service is friendly and the prices reasonable. On a sunny day grab a seat on the outside deck.

Mini Espresso

Shop 50 London Court, Perth

-31.9549432579656 115.859139561653

This charming little café is doing a lot of great things considering the space these guys have to work in. However, they understand that it’s all about quality not quantity, and where it really shows is in their coffee. People travel far and wide for their caffeine fix and here’s why – well-trained baristas with no attitude, and they use the Fiori blend. There’s a good range of teas and cold drinks too. Breakfast is a rather gourmet affair while for lunch they do focaccias, baguettes and soups made daily. For those in a rush you can sms you’re your coffee order too.

Cimbalino Espresso

Shop P139 Enex100, 683 - 703 Hay St, Perth

-31.9544744503571 115.857846736908

Cimbalino Espresso in Hay Street is one of three of a kind located around Perth and is popular for breakfasts, light lunches and of course a range of coffee. Others in the Cimbalino chain are located in Cottesloe and Dalkeith. The house specialty is the ‘cimba’, which remains somewhat of a mystery concoction best discovered by visiting this, or any of the chain of outlets. Naturally, Cimbalino serve up the full range of Italian experience such as espresso, macchiato, ristretto, cappuccino, cafe latte and flat white. Predictably, Perth’s coffee snobs have delivered their judgement based on the high standards set by Melbourne’s baristas and Cimbalino appears to have passed muster, despite notably escalating its prices, overtaking most of the local competition in this regard.
