Melbourne's Best Vegetarian Restaurants

Vegetarian restaurants are no longer the last refuge of the urban hippy, their menus can be sophisticated and tasty and despite offering meals untouched by hoof or wing, even die hard meat eaters will find something to enjoy.

Great produce is paramount, and in Australia we have some of the best. Veggie eateries can, and usually do, choose fresh seasonal vegetables, usually organic and often locally grown, as the basis for their dishes.

Added to this, are unusual ingredients used in imaginative ways. Chia seeds, quinoa, cassava, kimchi style pickles, okra or seaweed may well feature alongside lentils and tofu. Plunging into a meal made with an unknown legume, grain, nut or spice can offer some delicious new taste sensations.

Many vegetarian places also draw on cooking traditions from cultures that have embraced the vegetable for centuries, such as India, Korea or Turkey. So be ready for exotic tastes and aromas you might not have thought possible from vegetables when meat is not there to grandstand.

Vegetarians tend to have a lower risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, but you don’t have to go 24/7 veggie to benefit. In particular, the good news for weight watchers (and who isn’t?) is that most veggie meals are low in fat.
And of course, if eating vegetarian is good for you, just think how much better it is for the animal you’re not eating.

Vegetarian restaurants across Melbourne are offering some wonderful alternatives to their meaty counterparts. You won’t be disappointed.
