Melbourne's Best Korean Restaurants

If you know anything at all about Korean food, it’s probably kimchi that springs to mind. Although this spicy cabbage dish is an acquired taste for many, it can be quite delicious, and is only the tip of the Korean cuisine iceberg.

Along with steamed rice, Korean meals traditionally consist of lots of side dishes or ‘banchan’ that come with the main meal. These can made from vegetables, meat or seafood prepared in a variety of ways. Kimchi, which is usually made from fermented vegetables such as napa cabbage, is one of the most popular.

Koreans have a long history of preserving food, so it’s common to find dishes pickled, salted, or fermented and they are often spicy. On the whole banchan are served cold, but stews and soups, known as ‘guk’, are also much loved and can be boiling.

Underpinning Korean cuisine is rice, to a lesser degree noodles, ‘dubu’ (tofu), vegetables, meats and, as Korea is a peninsula, seafood is a particular favourite.

Korean dishes are well known for the boldness of their flavours due to the popular use of such tasty ingredients as sesame oil, ‘daenjang’ (soybean paste), salt, garlic, ginger, ‘kochukaru’ (chili pepper flakes) and ‘gochujang’ (fermented red chili paste).

To really appreciate a good Korean meal, it is worth partaking in the traditional manner of sitting on the floor. The food is placed in the centre of the table for sharing, and while chopsticks are not mandatory as a spoon is also provided for soups and serving, if you can manage them, they are fun.

Kimchi Grandma

125 Koornang Road, Cargerie

-37.88854831 145.0571943

Ah, the grand old dame of Korean food in Melbourne is still going strong. It is a shame for those of us who live nowhere near Carnegie – which is most of us, that we are forced to make this considerable trek into the suburbs. However, for bulgogi (marinated beef) of this standard, travel you will! For well over a decade Kimchi Gramdma has been serving up authentic Korean cuisine. The sides of kim chi (spicy pickled cabbage) are complimentary, although you may have to pay for extra kim chi if dining in a group. Be warned – service can be a trifle tiring.
