Melbourne's Best Breakfasts

Melbourne city has always been known for its nightlife. Our alleyway bars alone have been reason enough for Sydneysiders to concede defeat and move south. Our big name establishment restaurants generally inhabit the city too. What our centre has to offer come evening is second to none, however, the suburb of Melbourne is not just for night-owls anymore.

There was a time when if you didn’t live in the CBD, there was no way in the world you would have trekked into town just for breakfast; except of course if it was to indulge at The European. Nowadays, with hipsters, retirees and suits all clamouring for their piece of city living, restaurateurs are all vying for their piece of the aforementioned’s wallets.  Yes, breakfast is big business in Melbourne.

Whether it’s the latest in organic, wheat-free, sugar-free granola with a side of bio-dynamic yoghurt or a big fry-up to tackle the night before, Melbourne, it seems, can now also lay claim to breakfast capital of Australia too.

Here are some of the best:

Cumulus Inc - The name Andrew McConnell should be enough to get you here for brekky.  McConnell is serving up breakfast heaven in the form of big-flavoured, hearty dishes such as the Full English – complete with blood sausage on toast.

Von Haus - For those days when you’d really rather be somewhere in Rome or Paris. This beautiful little establishment offers simple starts to the day such as Danishes, tarts, and croissants. Great eggs and soldiers too.

The European - The old girl still packs them in and here’s why: it oozes warmth and reflects a time when life didn’t have to move so fast. This elegant venue covers the gamut from muesli to Croque Monsieur. Their legendary crumpets make life complete.

The Commercial Bakery - These guys get it. Stylish without being too hip and faddish, and quality not quantity. This little café bakes their own scrumptious pastries and breads and it shows. Straight from the oven pain au chocolat and still warm sourdough – doesn’t get better than that.

Mr Tulk - The fact that the state’s library is hard to get a table at for breakfast, just proves what a cultured bunch we are.  Grab a newspaper, join the communal table and let the games begin. There’s a great breakfast selection with the corned beef hash with poached eggs being a favourite.

Journal - Yes, it’s a hipster's paradise, but that’s not always a bad thing. This is a good looking place, but it’s attributes go much deeper. Great coffee and excellent bruschetta - try the ricotta and prosciutto or the simple avocado and lemon.

Von Haus

1A Crossley Street, Melbourne

-37.8116762673301 144.971385598183

If you like absolute privacy and quiet chat with your mates, this rustic if somewhat space-challenged wine bar may not be for you. It's one big shared dark wood table or be damned, though the lack of seats and hidden locale mean it's intimate. You just might have to be intimate with a stranger. Tucked behind Bourke Street's The Paperback, this former residence of colonial artist Eugene Von Guerard packs in a heap more charm than the floor plan should allow. A great, if similarly petite wine list is fleshed out with tasty cocktails and enticing home cooking
