Farmers' markets are a saturday morning gathering point. From the family who needs an outing, the folk who want to know about where their food comes from, those wanting to cut their food miles, those after a specific non-supermarket ingredient - the market brings everyone together.

Let's not forget the suppliers. It's their market after all. Mini-vans with their boots open, or a garden shade erected, with fold out tables stacked with their limited inventory, these are the images of a farmer selling direct to market.

At a farmers' market you can actually speak to those who grew your food. That's pretty important. Those selling will answer your questions and share your interest - everyone loves discussing their own story.

Markets like this often seem like they cost a few dollars more, but the quality and flavour is usually better. The range is certainly a broader church that what you would find in your local supermarket aisles.
