When the first Melbourne International Comedy Festival was held back in 1987, it was in recognition of the vibrancy and diversity of Melbourne's local comedy scene.

Today, while that scene is still going strong, it sometimes seems as if the festival's parade of international acts and household names threatens to overwhelm those local artists not fortunate enough to have their own television program or radio show.

This year, in honour of the Comedy Festival's 25th anniversary, take a punt on some comedians who aren't household names. Here are our suggestions of just some of the rising stars you should see.
