We Australians have the habit of doubting our excellence in every endeavour save for sport. We are happy as a nation to yell “oy oy oy” from the bleachers at any event involving muscle and grunt.

When it comes to cheering our own artists, however, we're the embarrassed, silent winners of the international wooden spoon.

While it's true that recent years have seen less than spectacular performance in film, theatre, literature and the other significant arts, this is hardly the case with comedy. At the world's comic festivals, we claim gold.

And, of course, we dominate our own.
