In 1993, an, unknown Bill Hicks was lured to the stage by some of comedy's keenest aficionados. The Comedy Festival's organisers might have recognised his talent. But reviews in that year did not glow.

Since then, of course, Hicks has passed away and his rep has ascended. It's not uncommon to hear his name uttered in the same breath as Lenny Bruce.

The fact is, living or dead, Hicks deserves these accolades. And the festival deserves a cheer for recognising his bleak charms at the height of his short career.

It's with a hope ignited by Hicks and kept aflame by other fresh international talent that you should approach the festival. You just never know which traveller will capture your heart and incite your laughter.
