In the tough world of comedy, the gentler gender ain’t the girls.

Ask a female comic about sexism in her game and, depending on the hubris, booze and shame she's copped that season, she'll answer with a frown. It's not that the stage is off-limits to funny ladies, she'll tell you. It's just that she might get tripped up by a bloke in the green room.

Audiences don't give a hoot about the gender of their comedians. We just want a good laugh. It's the old guard of comedy that upholds antique ideas about what a “feminine” woman might be.

Female comedians need to harden at light-speed to survive these old-fashioned snarls. Maybe, just maybe, that's why the handful of women who tough it out get so damn good.
