In the strictest, and dullest, description, the cabaret form is distinguished by its venue. If you are seated with a table separating you and the performance, then you're at a “cabaret”.

A more explicit definition may warn you: the seat and table service will prove the move comfortable parts of your evening. Real “cabaret” must upset you; if only a little bit. Of course, this isn't post-Weimar Germany and we don't live in a nation threatened by crushing boot rule. Nonetheless, it remains the job of the cabaret to upend paradigms, provoke uneasy laughter and bring a drink to your table to ease the blinding pain of insight.
