Drinking in Bondi

There is a very real case for arguing that Bondi Beach is the epicentre of Sydney. The beach is one of the images to pop into the head of global citizens, right after the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. On certain sunny days it seems like half the world's got their towel spot checked out.

Once the reserve of the backpacker, with the exception of certain glamorous bastions - notably Icebergs - Bondi has upped its game in recent years. Now you can enjoy everything from teeny tiny wine bars to fabulously glam cocktail lounges.

But it's the view, more than anything, that makes a night out along those golden shores an absolute winner. Life is sweet, sometimes.

Here are our top tips:

Icebergs Dining Room and Bar - an iconic legend in its own lifetime, Icebergs is synonymous with Bondi Beach thanks to its breathtaking views across the glorious sands. from its southern peak. Outstanding drinks, amazing food, and free perving on the private members' pool below.

The Rum Diaries - the somewhat bizarre name soon explains itself when you set your eyes on the enviable selection of said liquor, hailing from all four concerns of the globe. One to get seriously boozy in in beautiful surrounds.

Drift - part of Ravesi's, Drift is perfect for reclining on daybeds on that impressive balcony, looking out over Bondi with a cocktail in hand. Life doesn't get much better than this rather slick little spot, but prepare for maniacal door bitches at the weekend.
Speakeasy - I'm a sucker for the prohibition theme, and this itsy bitsy joint doesn't disappoint. Grab a glass of vino from their mouth-watering list, squeeze in tight and make good friends with your neighbours, then share some tapas for the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life.

The Flying Squirrel - this joint is all over the place. Run by Canadians, they import Clamato juice to create the nation’s signature Bloody Caesar, a sort of fishy twist on the Mary. Then there's the tapas which hops all over the world grabbing whatever it likes. Who cares? It works, and anywhere that plasters the walls with comic books is right by me.

Mocean - forgive them the terrible name and the almost wilfully insane approach of building a bunker bar that entirely ignores those stunning ocean views, because this basement beauty is all heart and soul. It’s the perfect place for a romantic date with sultry singers all week round.

Corner House - the big daddy to Shop & Wine Bar, Corner House is an excellent Italian eatery and the brainchild of Anthony Kaplan. Forget the food, as good as it undeniably is, and head straight for the bar for some of the best cocktail concoctions in Sydney.

Bavarian Bier Cafe Bondi Beach - OK, so this one's part of a chain, but as chains go, this Bavarian-themed joint gets it right. Think giant, salty pretzels washed down with a fresh and zippy Paulaner Pils or a dark and malty Hofbrau Dunkel. All this and a centrally located view across the beach.

Bar Pacifica - not usually a fan of hotel bars either, but The Eastern gets it so right. This gloriously Oriental haunt is a decadently decorated escape with bold red flashes including the cool pit bull statue guarding the bar. Tantalising cocktails.

Looking to get away from the riff raff? Bar Pacifica is a great destination as many people can’t find it – however the scent of superior liquor and fashionable cologne offers a tantalising clue to its whereabouts.
