Cheap Pots of Beer In Melbourne

Hovering somewhere between “I love you” and “You’ve won the lottery” sits one of the language’s most beautiful phrases. Cheap Beer.

Finding a place to drink is easy. Finding somewhere that serves beer at cheaper than normal prices can be harder.

A bit of leg work though will have you drinking like a king - even if you are still drinking beer. You'll have a few more dollars left in your pocket at nights end at these places.

Of course, like love and lotteries, cheap beer is fleeting. The three-dollar Corona deal at my local has long since been eclipsed by Cocktail Thursdays.  But, thanks to recent advancements in tech, we can now access the stuff of which brief poetry is made. There are any number of mobile phone apps specialising in happy hour info.

Find out when the pubs near you have a happy hour on. That's the first step.Generally speaking, happy hours occur between 4-7pm.

Try and drink only at those times. Not so easy.

Your Facebook account can also be a handy tool in the quest to build a better beer budget. At your desktop, make sure to include all of your closest pubs in your news feed for info on Four Dollar Peroni. (Yes! It does happen!) Or, when you use the mobile “check in” function on your phone, have a look at your closest pubs. You never know when that Cheap Beer will offer its amber poetry.

Sometimes there are drink and meal deals at your local. Makes sense to drink and eat at the same time.

When all the money at a bar has not been spent on the interior fit-out of the place the beer tends to be cheaper. That makes old school pubs and bowls club suddenly more attractive.

Many in my area were excited by Cocktail Thursday. But for me, there’s no greater Happy Hour than that which offer beer. Not all Manhattan cocktails are created equal and there’s an enormous difference between a martini made of Gordon’s and one wrought finely with Hendrick’s gin. Ditto for wine. “Red wine” can mean anything from Grange to vinegar.

But beer is beer. And thank all the poets and angels for that.

Happy cheap beer hunting!
