Casting For Kurt


Every decade has an anthem, and Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit was certainly the chosen song of the ‘90s. It’s easy then to understand why there are a stupendous amount of rumours surrounding the movie biopic of grunge legend Kurt Cobain, the Nirvana frontman and reluctant spokesperson for the MTV generation. While the movie has been talked about for years, no lead actors have been picked by Cobain’s drug-affected widow Courtney Love yet, but there are reports that she has her eyes set on James McAvoy or Ryan Gosling.

There were also internet rumours that Twilight heart-throb Robert Pattinson and Scarlett Johansson were to play the couple, but the Hole singer quickly dismissed the RPattz story. “Isn’t that so stupid? That’s just wrong, no offence to Pattinson,” Love scoffed, before adding on Twitter that she simply doesn’t think the teen icon could play the man who brought alternative rock to the mainstream. The Johansson rumours weren’t denied though, and the curvaceous actress has also expressed interest: “It would be a challenge... I think the idea is interesting and intriguing.” Love’s manager Jonathan Daniel has added fuel to the rumour by hinting, “Courtney likes Johansson as an actress and as a person, so it wouldn’t surprise me”.

Cobain rose to fame in the early ‘90s as the singer, songwriter and genius behind Nirvana, and took over MTV with the help of bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl. The reserved frontman soon became disenchanted with the overwhelming success of his band, and his substance abuse became progressively worse. In 1994, at the height of his career, Cobain killed himself. But there have always been conspiracy theories that Love murdered her husband – perhaps why she is so keen to get the biopic made and her name cleared.
