Brisbane's Best Chinese Restaurants

Perhaps one of the more enduring legacies of the gold rush, Chinese food was often the only ‘exotic’ cuisine available in many parts of Victoria up until the 80s. Of course, quality Chinese food could be a rare commodity, with big city Chinatowns generally having the bulk of the good restaurants.

No longer is this the case. Chinese food has long surpassed its hit and miss reputation, and hits are now the norm. In addition, the link between Chinese food and monosodium glutamate (MSG) additives has been assigned to the dustbin.

Today, Chinese food is embracing its strong traditional roots and authentic styles, using the freshest ingredients in a careful balance of flavours. Even 'Australian' Chinese, such as some sweet and sour dishes, are now worth another look.

Despite the many regional variations found in China, stir-fries and rice or noodle dishes are as popular here as there, while the most frequently found regional flavours in Australia are Cantonese, along with the spicier ones of Szechuan and Shanghai. Common flavours to all are ginger, soy sauce and spring onions.

Just some of the myriad of popular dishes include Yum Cha, selections of small dishes such as dumplings and rice rolls complemented with pots of jasmin tea, fried rice, Peking Duck, Kung Pao Chicken, hot pot and spring rolls.

Like nearly all cuisines in Australia, Chinese is undergoing a renaissance that is bringing out the best in what is a culturally fascinating and diverse eating experience. It really is time to give it another go.

Brisbane Chinese Restaurants

Oriental Taste

162 Beaudesert Road, Moorooka

-27.5322969776714 153.024616241455

Gone are the days when you had to travel to the heart of the city or Fortitude Valley for good food. The suburbs of Brisbane are now holding their own in terms of well-priced decent restaurants, and Oriental Taste is proof of this. Yum cha here is the specialty and you order from a picture menu rather than the traditional trolleys. The dumplings are made on-site and it shows. Try the chicken and chive dumplings, the pork and shark fin dumplings and the pork dumplings in soup. The service is attentive and friendly and the prices are very reasonable.

Big Gun Chinese Restaurant

Shop 7/2922 Logan Rd, Underwood

-27.608126095568867 153.11249345541

Ok, so firearms are not what you usually equate with yum cha, but don’t let that put you off. This is a great place when you’re after comfort food Asian style. The staff are friendly and the food is good and very well priced. Favourites include the prawn dumplings, the coriander dumplings and the plum duck. And of course, the steamed pork buns are always a winner. It opens early and closes late so those after good Chinese at 2am won’t be disappointed. On the whole the service is friendly even when they are full to the brim.

Aspley Oriental Restaurant

61/59 Albany Creek Rd, Aspley

-27.36200102074252 153.01401883363724

Yum cha is alive and well in Brisbane. The Aspley Oriental Restaurant sees them coming from far and wide to sample their excellent yum cha. All the usual suspects are well done, such as the steamed prawn dumplings, the pork spare ribs and the BBQ pork buns. Also try the stuffed tofu and eggplant and the crispy chicken feet. The seafood dishes are also good and there are a number of gluten free options too. It’s a great place to take the family and the prices are more than reasonable. There can be a wait for tables so get in early.

Landmark Restaurant

Shop/ 101 Cnr mains Road, Mccollough Street, Sunnybank

-27.5715337989834 153.063658475876

Everyone has their favourite yum cha restaurant, but, it just so happens that Landmark is high on a lot of people’s list. This big, bustling eatery absolutely pumps of a weekend and it shows no sign of slowing down. The sheer number of trolleys on the floor is a sight to see, but it is the food that keeps them coming back. From the plump and tender dumplings, to the salt and pepper squid to the chicken feet, lovers of yum cha will be well pleased. They are especially known for their duck. Service is good and the prices reasonable.

Manor Chinese Restaurant Cafe

The Glen Shopping Village Cnr Gaskell & Angel Street, Eight Mile Plains

-27.5838585867559 153.0961561203

Something of an institution within Brisbane’s dining scene, the Manor rests on more than its reputation. For starters they use the order form system. This is, of course, not as fun as the more traditional trolleys, however it does mean the food is hotter as it hasn’t circled the restaurant several times. Regulars say this is the best yum cha in Brisbane. Try the made to perfection fried calamari, and the dumplings, both steamed and fried, are all excellent. Other recommendations include the unusually light pork buns and for dessert the egg custard tarts are the best in town.
