There aren't many venues that have an ode written in their honour, but for the opening of the State Theatre Centre of WA in early 2011, theatre historian Ivan King wrote a poem praising it as "A playhouse of sumptuous design". And it seems the Australian Institute of Architects agree, having recently presented the Centre with three awards, including The Jeffrey Howlett Award for Public Architecture. Hosting the 575-seat Heath Ledger Theatre, and the 200+ seat performance space, Studio Underground, as well as a multi-purpose outdoor events space and two rehearsal rooms, Perth's new landmark is functional as well as beautifully designed, and regularly hosts a range of theatre and dance performances. Now all it needs is for a few decent restaurants to open up nearby!
