A visit to the classy West End Italian restaurant Millioncino is a feast for the eyes as well as the body. Specially-commissioned artworks by emerging Western Australian artists decorate the walls, adding intellectual interest to Millioncino's warm ambience. Owner Mario, the artist in the kitchen, specialises in the light, flavoursome cuisine of Lombardy in northern Italy while adding his own contemporary touch to classic dishes like risotto, gnocchi, Mediterranean fish soup and delicious desserts.

Editorial

Although the West End of Perth is now a flourishing hub of stylish boutiques and bars, there is still plenty of room for a few more quality restaurants. Though not as ostentatious as its neighbourhood counterparts, patrons should consider Millioncino sitting quietly on the corner of Murray and Milligan Streets.

Located at the base of the West End Apartments, Millioncino holds back on flashy façades and thumping music, instead giving diners a truly romantic experience. Inside, each table is laid with its own candle, accentuating the intimacy of the terracotta-toned interior. Walls are adorned with artwork by local emerging artists, adding a certain freshness to this ten year-old restaurant.

Specialising in the cuisine of Lombardy (located in the north of Italy), owner and chef Mario Chiametti serves up a range of traditional, flavoursome yet healthy dishes that are lighter than most well-known Italian meals.

Take, for instance, the starter of quail with endive salad and balsamic vinegar. These delicious little birds are cooked perfectly without a hint of dryness, while the balsamic brings a beautiful tang to the dish. Then there’s the simple yet elegant range of mains, like the veal scallopine with ham and sage or the grilled prawns with lemon, oregano and olive oil. As a bit of a prawn addict, this dish really had me squirming in my seat with its delicate flavours, allowing the freshness of the prawns to shine like a real hero. What Italian meal would be complete without a serving of tiramisu? Millioncino’s Venetian version of this dish is pure heaven for those who appreciate this classic Italian dessert.

As with most things in life, it’s the quiet ones you have to look out for and Millioncino is definitely worth seeking out.
