Ellington Jazz Club

Any self-respecting city has to have a jazz club.

Editorial

The jazz cats of Perth found themselves clicking their fingers in delight when this quality, classy establishment - named after the grand duke of Jazz, Duke Ellington no less, opened the doors of this 108-year-old restored heritage-listed building in Northbridge eight years ago.

The Ellington could rival the sleekest, smoothest New York jazz club with its low-slung mood lighting and French style café table-serviced cabaret where you sit watching the top class international touring acts and the cream of Australian Jazz talent, jam sessions, big bands, fusion groups, and cutting edge improvising ensemble, whilst feasting on the tapas menu. While the Late Night Groove Series on Friday and Saturday evening showcases Perth's up-and-coming jazz, soul, and R&B artists.

Be warned: jazz fans are people who actually like to listen to the music. So chatterboxes can head upstairs to the lounge bar on the first floor where you'll hear the gig pumped up from downstairs, so you can settle back for a yak and cocktail. Downstairs there is also a general standing area by the big brassy polished bar. If you want a table it's best to book early in the week to guarantee your spot.

It's a mixed age dressed up crowd that patronize this joint but it's appears that Gen Y are discovering jazz too. The Duke would be pleased.
