The Chimney
Editorial
Located at the western end of James Street, it stands out from the crowd with a glass frontage and stark white walls. By day it's a busy spot for coffee and breakfast before it switches to the lunch menu. Chef David Walker's travels throughout North Africa and Europe are represented on his menu, which can't be pigeonholed into any specific country. There's African-style fried chicken, an Indian tasting plate, sang choy bow, eggplant parmigiana and pan ko squid. And that's just on the lunch menu!
If you're not yet feeling like you're on a culinary world safari, just wait until you see the entree and mains menus. The entree of homemade harissa-spiced chicken sausage with spicy couscous is quite tasty, but the salad of gorgonzola, fig and shaved prosciutto with crostini is a well-executed classic. As well as a generous selection of pasta and rice dishes, there are some seriously good options to sample on the mains menu.
The roasted fillet of veal with oxtail dumplings, porcini mushroom ragout and celeriac puree is an original combination of flavours while the lemon, olive and rosemary stuffed chicken kiev is served with delicious fried polenta. I could easy graze on a whole bowl of this stuff! There is a handful of other dishes like confit duck, braised lamb shank and a wonderful seafood paella. If you can manage dessert, the lemon tart with raspberry coulis is worth a try. The Chimney might just be the perfect reason to return to Northbridge.
