Opal Cafe
Editorial
Northbridge may be Perth’s central entertainment district and is packed with clubs, pubs and restaurants, but venture just outside these busy streets and you’ll find Opal Cafe. Located opposite the picturesque Russell Square, Opal Cafe offers a little touch of peace and quiet in an area that can sometimes leave one with a banging headache. For starters, the interior is light and bright with modern decor and comfortable banquettes; a far cry from the wicker chairs and terracotta tiles populating most of the Northbridge cafes. Coffee lovers will adore Opal Cafe’s ever changing “blend of the day”, chosen by staff who have all undergone extensive barista training. If drinking the same blend of coffee daily is beginning to bore you, then Opal Cafe is your salvation.
If it’s food you need, the menu is rather extensive and covers breakfast, lunch and a range of take-away options. Start the day with Bircher muesli, eggs benedict or the generous Opal big breakfast, complete with hash browns, crispy bacon, pork sausages and much more. If you’re in for lunch there’s a delicious Penang curry with prawns and chilli jam, parmesan-crumbed chicken tenders with red wine risotto and balsamic glaze or the wonderfully satisfying Ploughman’s lunch. English pork pie, Cumberland sauce, cheddar cheese, pickled onions and bread make this dish a very unique addition to the menu. On a lighter note, the Thai beef salad and Somen noodle salad with prawns and toasted sesame dressing are both very flavoursome. For those on the run, there’s also a great range of fresh and toasted rolls on display in the cabinet, including the chicken and Camembert roll with cranberry sauce. So the next time you find yourself wandering the streets of Northbridge looking for a fresh venue wander down Aberdeen Street and head for Opal Cafe.
