Ha-Lu Japanese restaurant
Editorial
Based on the famous Japanese dining style known as izakaya, Ha-Lu patrons are encouraged to order a range of dishes designed to share, similar to tapas. This social style of Japanese dining is relatively new to Perth, and Ha-Lu is demonstrating it with an abundance of elegance. The interior alone is breathtaking, with neutral coloured suede banquettes, chairs and even light fittings oozing comfort and opulence without being pretentious. Bamboo wallpaper reminds you that you're in an Asian restaurant without the gaudy, in-your-face decor that is sometimes the unfortunate downfall of other eateries.
Traditional Japanese favourites such as beef tataki, tempura and kara-age are present for those seeking familiar flavours. There are also quite a few offerings I guarantee you will never have seen on a an Australian menu before and are well worth trying. Braised pork belly, deep-fried crumbed camembert cheese with blueberry sauce, and duck and aubergine with Madeira are all as tasty as they sound and great conversation starters. For those not in a sharing mood, Ha-Lu also does a selection of bento boxes such as teriyaki chicken or fish and crispy chicken katsu. My opinion? Be adventurous and walk on the wild side - you can get a bento box anywhere!
