Bellissimo Deli e Cucina
Editorial
Riding the wave of success experienced by the original Bellissimo in Claremont, this sister restaurant has fast made a name for itself but also offers something extra. Located at street level of Mt Hawthorn’s groovy “Mezz” complex, Bellissimo caters for all walks of life, not forgetting budding gourmands. A deli section within the restaurant sells a range of imported and local produce including the very ingredients you may come across while dining here. Spacious and comfortable, Bellissimo is rarely empty. Simple Italian fare has been perfected by owner/chef Darren Lawrence who has earned his keep in Perth kitchens for well over a decade. Big appetites are well catered for but the larger serves don’t signal less flavour or lower quality, as with many of these trattoria-style venues.
With close to twenty wood-fired pizzas, ten traditional pastas and many classic Italian mains to choose from, make sure you allow enough time to have a good read of the menu. The good news is once you have made your decision and ordered, your meals usually arrive at your table faster than you can say “where’s my order”. Now when it comes to pizza, my motto has always been that simple is best. On this occasion I made a special exception for the Contadina (with wood-fired chicken, mozzarella, potato, rosemary and grilled onions) and am glad I did so as it was superb. If you’re after something a little more sophisticated though, the mains cover a range of dishes from veal scaloppine to chicken involtini, with a lovely risotto of confit duck thrown in for good measure. And, if you ask your waitperson very nicely, they might just tell you what was in your favourite dish so you can purchase the ingredients from the Bellissimo deli and recreate it at home.
