Western Australian Museum Maritime

We couldn’t think of a better location for a maritime museum if we tried. It’s slap bang in the heart of Fremantle’s working Port and a visit is a must to get a true understanding of this far flung part of Australia’s life long relationship with the sea.

Editorial

The Maritime Museum is divided into six themed galleries incorporating everything from the might of the Indian Ocean, to the fishing industry, early forms of maritime transport, maritime sport, defence and cargo - if it floats and has anything to do with WA's territorial waters - it's probably here.

While there's no doubt this museum is a salty dog's paradise, there is one exhibit here, that above all others, manages to steal the show. And that's Australia II. It was this famous racing yacht with the winged keel that won the America's Cup from the United States in 1983 - and put Fremantle firmly on the Aussie map. The unlikely yachting victory was a famous day in Australia's history, reminding us of a more relaxed era in our country's past when our Prime Minister at the time, Bob Hawke, went on live television declaring that, “any boss who sacks anyone for not turning up today is a bum.” Ahh, how it takes you back!

Maritime activity is the lifeblood of Fremantle, and a visit to the museum is a great lesson in its colourful history. Plus, you'll leave speaking like a pirate - this we promise!
