Ped's Homestyle Thai

Introducing locals to real Thai food as it is prepared and eaten in Thai homes.

Editorial

Having run the restaurant in outlying Jandakot, Ped and Alan Keys opened Ped's Fremantle in March 2005. In an area that is not known for Asian cuisine, they have been busy ever since. The premises are small so bookings are advised. The "homestyle" in the name is a deliberate move to stress that this is the kind of food eaten in Thai homes, rather than Australian restaurants. Ped drives the kitchen; having been taught to cook by her mother and grandmother, her food is in the style of northern Thailand. Watching her at work, you do feel that you are a guest in her home, which happens to also be on the premises.

Indications of the heat of the dishes should be taken seriously. Much of the food is mild but when they say hot, they mean hot! For a little fire on the tastebuds try their green chicken curry (with eggplant, bamboo, carrots, peas, broccoli, simmered with a green curry paste and coconut cream and finished with fresh coriander). You will find Thai curries, salads and a variety of stir-fry dishes that can be ordered with choices of tofu, chicken, beef, pork, seafood or prawns. Homok talay is a show-stopping generous selection of seafood, coconut milk and mild curry paste thickened with egg and served in a bamboo basket steamer. This is a welcome newcomer to Fremantle.
