Experience a European union of excellent coffee, light lunches and exquisite homemade French pastries.

Editorial

Parisian born and trained pastry chef Gerard Machefert has brought a little piece of France to the heart of Fremantle. JJ's Cafe and Patisserie specialises in authentic French pastries all made on the premises. Sit outside under the grapevine and indulge yourself with millefeuille, layers of light vanilla custard and melt-in-the-mouth homemade puff pastry. The bavarois (chocolate sponge with chocolate cream in a chocolate case) is the perfect indulgence after a meal from the petite, but very functional, menu.

All-day breakfasts are another drawcard. Try the rather colourfully named "shit on the shingle" (creamed beef on toast with egg) a rather atypical addition to the usual morning suspects. Of course if you fancy a more continental start to your day, Machefert makes what is arguably the best croissant in Perth: light, flaky and wickedly buttery, it is the perfect accompaniment to your morning coffee. Although there are no plans to open regularly for dinner (despite repeated customer requests), Machefert does occasionally host special three course French dinners for a very reasonable price, usually around the $30 mark. These are very popular and tables book fast so you will need to ring ahead to reserve your place.
