Not only does this multi-arts organisation welcome over 200, 000 visitors a year thanks to a rich program of activities including exhibitions, events, courses and gigs, it’s also a popular outdoor concert venue hosting everyone from Elvis Costello to the Black Eyed Peas. Built by convicts in 1861 and at one insensitive time in history actually named the ‘Fremantle Lunatic Asylum’, this impressive six acre site has been at one time or another a hospital, a women’s refuge, a naval base and a museum before settling on a Arts Centre in 1972.

Editorial

Due to the ghosts reported to be floating around the grounds and the number of 'spiritual sightings'noted, the Fremantle Arts Centre is known as the most haunted building in the Southern Hemisphere. And while the ghosts kick back in the 'other' world, back in our world there's plenty of stuff to do here.

Exhibitions include a cutting-edge selection of contemporary arts from local, national and international, artists. In addition to these, artists' residencies program, workshops, short courses and school holiday programs make the Freo Arts Centre an important player on the Perth Arts scene.

And if the unique gift shop and the contemporary art doesn't grab you, the music will! Fremantle Arts Centre has become one of Perth's best-loved music venues for just about every major name passing through WA. During summer, Courtyard Music is a Sunday afternoon session and great opportunity for local bands to strut their stuff. No wonder just about every cool band in the last five years hails from Perth.
