John Street Cafe
Editorial
I'm ashamed to admit I have only ever visited John Street Cafe for special occasions like Mother's Day, but how I wish this wasn't the case. Tucked away on suburban John Street lined with Norfolk pine trees, the setting is peaceful. The cafe is an old converted house that exudes charm and character, which seems to be much loved by its loyal, local clientele and occasional visitors. Although John Street Cafe does some of the best comfort food in town, it is best known for its all-day breakfasts. A word of advice though: if you're planning to sleep in before you head this way for a weekend breakfast, be prepared to join the queue which usually starts at around 9am.
So what does this place have that diners want so badly? Well, for starters, all the produce is top-notch and everything is cooked with love. The eggs are free-range, the bacon is cooked perfectly without an ounce of gristle in sight, the toast is never burnt and the staff are always so accommodating you'd swear they were on Prozac. How can so many people be so happy at this time of the morning? The answer is pretty obvious - staff actually enjoy working here and diners adore the food so much, the love just seems to flow back and forth. There's plenty to choose from on the breakfast menu, with “the lot” being the best choice for those hungry for a fry-up. With eggs, bacon, delicious chipolata sausages, tomato, hash brown and organic toast you'll be forgiven for skipping lunch. Other delights include a breakfast bagel with bacon, avocado and spinach or the eggs Benedict with a truly divine hollandaise sauce. Take it from me - don't wait for a special occasion to visit John Street Cafe.
