Claremont is one of those suburbs you either love or hate. Some adore it for its boutique shopping and cosmopolitan atmosphere, while others detest the oh-so-subtle snootiness. Kuppa Restaurant and Bar is one of Claremont's most popular eateries where you can enjoy a meal or cocktail without any pretence from the staff. Polished concrete floors, comfortable banquettes and fresh flowers create an urban yet relaxed feel, with a smart little alfresco section which is perfect for people watching and eavesdropping. By day, Kuppa entertains locals getting their morning coffee fix before the business and retail crowd move in for lunch. It's not uncommon to witness a bevy of ladies showing off their purchases over a warm mushroom salad with cherry tomatoes, oregano and Bulgarian cheese washed down with a cosmopolitan or two.
Kuppa's modern Australian menu features a range of innovative dishes like zuppa de pesche (baked, fresh seafood) and beef tagliete (sliced beef fillet in red wine jus) but the daily specials are definitely worth considering. Crispy duck with mash and porcini sauce, and crispy skin barramundi with chickpeas and tomato concasse were two of the specials that caught my attention. Although a little pricey (much like the $450 top in the window a few doors down), the dishes are of decent size and very flavoursome. Doubling as a bar, Kuppa is also a popular spot for a catch-up with friends after work and is particularly busy on Friday afternoons. Saturday and Sunday mornings see a strong breakfast trade before lunching ladies take over once again, shopping bags in tow. If the food at Kuppa doesn't grab you then the cocktails sure will, dah-ling.
