Editorial

Home to a plethora of DIY and hardware shops, larger-than-life retail outlets and the odd pub, Balcatta is not exactly a suburb that springs to mind when I think of places to dine at. However, if you’ve ever been stuck at the lights on Wanneroo Road near Reid Highway you may have noticed Seven Mile Inn. Located on this bustling strip, the venue is so much more than meets the eye. Seven Mile Inn earned its name from the old saw mill and tavern located seven miles from the GPO, just south of the Inn. Back in the day, horse-drawn coaches heading north would stop here so passengers and horses could grab a feed before continuing on their journey. Just take a look at the historic photos gracing the walls of the cafe inside.

Proud to be an integral part of Balcatta’s multicultural community, the food at Seven Mile Inn has a distinct international feel with dishes like nasi goreng, charred Italian sausage and Mediterranean vegetable risotto for starters. On the mains menu there’s a delicious Moroccan chicken, Madras chicken curry and the best selling Darwin chicken breast with mango, avocado and a Riesling cream reduction. It’s not all about chicken though. Venture further into the menu and you’ll discover pub-grub favourites such as reef and beef, lamb shanks and veal parmigiana. Those of you infatuated with critters from the sea will adore the “new” seafood plate. Brimming with chilli mussels, salt and pepper calamari, a prawn and bacon skewer, crispy whiting and more, it’s certainly a dish of grand proportions. As with most venues of this style, there are specials on offer most weeknights such as schnitzel night on Tuesdays and “Ribs, Bibs and Chips” on Sundays. The bib wearing is a must to tackle these Flintstone-style ribs!
