There are some restaurants you remember for great service while others are remembered for delicious cuisine. Then there are the handful of restaurants you remember for exceptional cuisine and stop-at-nothing service. The Gala Restaurant falls into this latter category and has the awards to prove it. Just a short drive south of the city, it's an intimate little place with rustic charm and European style. Owners Hans Lang and Marianne Kempf are both certified master chefs from Germany and owe their success to a simple yet poignant philosophy: “To be innovative in the future, one has to respect the past.” With this in mind, they have created a menu that combines traditional cooking techniques with modern ideas to produce an array of dishes you'll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.

As the pivotal dish for any restaurant eager to please, the tasting plate is phenomenal. Although only available for groups of 10 or more, diners choose their favourite four dishes from a wide selection, which are then individually plated for each guest. Think smoked trout salad on potato rosti, veal liver parfait or empanada tart filled with avocado salsa and grilled scallop, and you have a pretty good idea of what to expect. While your head is still in the clouds, you might as well consider the rest of the menu. French Perigord truffle specialties can be the main attraction of your meal if you have a penchant for these little gems. Once again, there's a delectable range of dishes to choose from like a warm yabby and scallop salad with truffle mayonnaise dressing or the truffle risotto with duck foie gras and sauteed quail breast. And then there's the Gala crayfish degustation - local crayfish served over five courses in styles I can only dream about. Complete indulgence.
