Orange is no lemon but is can sometimes be more of a place to be seen.

Editorial

Having been a very popular spot on Chapel Street for many years, the only thing holding back Orange from getting a fantastic review is sometimes its staff can just be pretentious and that’s a real turn off. But you know, it’s so hard getting good help these days. Apart form this, Orange is one of the best spots for crowd watching out front and waving to anyone who takes your fancy, as that’s what others seem want to do, they’re clearly not locals.

Orange is well loved for its breakfast menu with options like baked eggs with spicy tomato, feta and chorizo, with a Bloody Mary for $20 (now that’s worth getting up for). The lunch and dinner menu attracts small groups to the large table area out front. The inside area is a bit of a squish but there is a great little courtyard out back with wooden bench seats, a few small tables and a gorgeous old peppercorn tree hanging overhead. They do put out heaters in winter, so the courtyard is the perfect spot for a quiet wine or bite before you head out of an evening.

The drinks menu is really quite good, and no not a lot more than you might pay at other venues these days. Wines start at $7 for the Red Cliffs (Vic) Chardonnay or Petit Verdot and go up to about $14.50 for a glass of Italian Verdicchio. Beers include Asahi, Leff Blonde and Kronenbourg on tap starting at $6-9, while the standard local and import beers start at $6. There’s a great selection of import beers as well, if that’s your thing, try Sapporo or the Schofferhofer for $9. If you’re after top shelf amber, try the Chimay Blue Reserve (750ml) for $28. You know Chimay? No Kimmy doesn’t wear it. It’s the Trappist beer that can’t decide whether it’s a beer or champagne, so they shove in a cork and charge like the latter. But seriously, combined with the warm snack of truffled button mushrooms for $8, it’s a marriage for the mouth and wallet.
