Basque Tapas & Wine
Editorial
There's nothing overly unique about tapas anymore. Everyone's offering it, from RSLs to Crown Casino. But Windsor's Spanish outpost, Basque Tapas & Wine, manages to maintain an air of authenticity about proceedings.
The venue is a haven from the hoons of Chapel, with beautiful wrought iron furniture, including a great bar perched at the front of the venue. Dark stucco walls are hung with crucifixes and Virgin Marys a-go-go.
An extensive Spanish wine list makes washing down the tapas an even more welcoming experience. The degustation menu, at $49 per person, is a bit of a bargain too, including churros con chocolate and a glass of vino to boot.
The tapas selection is damned impressive, and actually tastes the way it should. Highlights include the garlic prawns with chilli, manchego cheese with tomato and eggplant and jamon croquetas served with red capsicum sauce. They are presented like perfect little art works that you can hardly bare to eat. You will, of course, get over any reservations.
The staff are attentive but not too in your face, and thoroughly encourage enjoyment with a tasty range of cocktails, not to mention the Spanish sherries on offer. All in all, a perfect spot for injecting some Latin loving into your life.
