Back Bar
Editorial
Located just behind Tusk on the corner of Chapel and Green Streets, Back Bar has built its reputation on comfort, quality cocktails and consistently friendly staff. During the week, downstairs opens to the public from 5pm until about 11pm or midnight. On weekend the place picks up a bit with both private and open parties that go until about 3am, after which everyone usually trawls down to 101 or Revolver trying to gain early morning entry (although a taxi to a house party via the 24 hour bottle shop could be a better option for some).
The bar is divided into two sections, the downstairs Red Lounge and Gold Lounge upstairs. Both feature big gilded mirrors and loads of seating for lushing around. It’s the kind of style that has since been copied a little too much, but the style still feels genuine here. Despite being intimate in scale, both of these smallish lounges can pack in a crowd without it feeling to squashed, even if you don’t know everyone. Both Lounges have been lovingly decorated with a polish of the original pressed tin ceilings, Persian style carpets lining the floors, flocked wallpaper (before it became trend), vintage lighting and plenty of plush old couches and armchairs you can sink into with a cocktail and a beau.
Back Bar is also very flexible with function bookings so you can arrange open functions which are the cheap version and where general punters can join your party, right up to exclusive giving you the run of the Golden Lounge until stumps, but you will be about 2G out of pocket for the minimum spend and room hire cost (the bar tab is the most expensive). I’ve been to some truly awesome parties here, so can honestly recommend taking the upstairs lounge out for a private party of 70-100 or more. The tiny dancefloor can fit a DJ and some speaker systems, but don’t let that fool you, that little floor has packed in some raging parties.
