The Prince Bandroom
Editorial
Upcoming gigs are scrawled across a substantial blackboard that borders the entrance. A well-handled wooden staircase leads the way upstairs to a bandroom that's been active for well on sixty years. A stage, a dance floor surrounded by a couple of well-positioned bars, and a scattering of bench seats make up the space.
It's a near-perfect combination for a near-perfect venue. Spacious enough to get lost in the energy of the crowd, but not so giant you're reaching for the binoculars to make out the action on stage. The only gripe is a thick black pillar slap bang in front of this stage, but you figure it's preferable to the roof falling down.
Shows are always energetic, from international DJs like Tricky and the Freestylers, to local acts like The Herd, Ash Grunwald, Architecture In Helsinki, and pretty much everything in between; including gay-friendly events. A wide balcony overlooking the action on Fitzroy Street doubles as a smoking room and a place to rest weary ears.
