The Palais Theatre

The current building was opened in 1927 after initially being destroyed by fire. Originally called Palais Pictures, it was all about the feature films, or 'talkies'. Since then, the Palais has showered its patrons with ballet, musicals, opera and more recently live music. The eclectic line-up has included everyone from Kenny Rogers and Sinead O'Connor to Guy Sebastian, Duran Duran and Air.
It still sports a grand entrance foyer with fancy carpet and sweeping staircases which take you up to a pre-gig bar and entry to the dress circle. Should you be late, ushers are on hand to lead you to your seat. It does take a bit of getting used to, seeing a gig sitting down, kinda like drinking beer out of a stemmed glass, but once you get the hang of it, it's quite divine. Especially if you are seated in the Lounge, where the seats are slightly wider and still have the original foot warmers.
Pretty much anywhere you sit affords a fine view of the stage, although the further back you travel the more pint-size the performers. A minor quibble when it comes to this most memorable venue.
