The Metropol

Up the top end of Fitzroy Street is the Metropol, with plenty of outdoor seating... and sangria!

Editorial

Grab a jug of Sangria, the house special, and chill out with a group of friends under the palm trees at Metropol. Oh, did your crew just double in size? No worries this outdoor venue has you covered in summer or winter.

Metropol is both an outdoor bar and restaurant, and is a great spot for groups and small parties, offering a relaxed open-air venue just off the main St Kilda drag, Fitzroy Street. Located inside the former St Kilda Railway Station (now the number 96 light rail stop) Metropol is somewhat unique in the area as it caters to groups, and is comfortable in all of Melbourne's weird and wonderful weather. It's opposite the George Wine Bar and George Cinema as well, so is a good place to try if your wallet has thinned out from too much expensive wine.

The large outdoor area features big, chunky, wooden tables and benches, under rows of red umbrellas that are also screened off from the street and block most of the wind and noise. The bar is nestled in next to their new sister venue, Miss Shanghai, an Asian-themed tapas bar, but the menu at Metropol is enough to keep most punters satisfied with generous sized steaks, salads, pastas and pizzas. The wine selection is nearly all Australian and New Zealand, while staff will happily mix up one of their specialty Martini cocktails, ranging from the über-sweet Strawberry Chocolate to the more traditional Dry Martini - but the Sangria jugs for $17 are ideal for a lazy summer day after the beach.

While Metropol is located up the top end of Fitzroy Street, away from the main live music venues, there are still plenty of other bars and restaurants nearby, but its real drawcard is the size of the outdoor seating area. Keep this one in mind when you're heading out after a gig with mates or trying to avoid lining up to get into one of the smaller, more expensive venues.

Love Love Love the metropol. Together with Lionel they make up my locals! Who in St Kilda wouldn't go here for delicious early week dinners, and weekend parties!!? All my friends book their parties here, from out of towners to local mates. the staff are always friendly, and the music is always good. Of course summer rocks but winter means you don't have to get through the crowds to enjoy a good party!
