Mockingbird Bar

A theatrically splendid and intimate hidey spot from which to escape the madness of Fitzroy Street.

Editorial

What a chameleon of contradictions St Kilda’s George Hotel has proven to be. Propped up proudly on the corner of Fitzroy and Grey Street, the imposing building recalls days past, when St Kilda was a destination for a well-to-do crowd escaping the heat of the city during summer. The twentieth century has seen the mood of the George and its many bars, clubs, function rooms and restaurants change relative to the mood of St Kilda in general. A new century has seen a return the gentrified past for this old Dame and in particular, one of the bars within its walls in the form of the Mockingbird Tapas Bar.

Along with a swag of other very smartly turned out Fitzroy Street bars, Mockingbird hails a move away from the grunge of the past and brings with it a new glamour and sophistication that has been absent in St Kilda for many years. Nestled, or rather, caged in the corner of the George Hotel foyer is a jewel-box like establishment that serves interestingly put together tapas, bespoke cocktails (look out for the ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ or the ‘Atticus Finch’ cocktails at $18 each) and an affordable list of wines (by the glass for up to $10 or by the bottle at round $36 – $56) and a global representation of beers.

A dramatic red velvet curtain dominates the interior and serves as a backdrop to rich, warm timber and stone finishes, Art Deco effects and the decorative architectural elements of the original hotel foyer, all set to a soundscape of punchy jazz. Mockingbird is a theatrically splendid and intimate hidey spot from which to escape the madness of Fitzroy Street.
