Miss Shanghai
Editorial
Situated near the corner of St Kilda's vibrant Fitzroy Street and Canterbury Place, Miss Shanghai is a decadent slice of the Eastern exotic. The name itself is a sly little nudge nudge, wink wink towards the old tradition of a beauty contest held between the prostitutes of China's historic Quing Dynasty. The winner of said competition would be crowned 'Miss Shanghai'. Of course, this is most definitely a cheeky reference to the age old trade on Grey Street just across the road.
The interior is gorgeous, resplendent with a giant stone buddha head, teak wood furniture and intricate patterned screens. The whole thing is candlelit and suffused with a warm glow from delicate orange paper lanterns, and the open fire, sparkling of crystal chandeliers. And the cocktail list is pretty beautiful too, with a feisty Mai Thai Mule and, of course, the obligatory Shanghai Sling.
Food-wise, smaller dishes take no risks with tasty treats like vegetable spring rolls, San Choi Bao and Peking Duck Pancakes. Main courses tend more toward Thai cuisine, with Laksa, Nasi Goreng and Green Curry putting in an appearance.
The younger, beautiful crowd laps up the atmosphere, and there's a fantastic, sprawling garden outback, so they can sip on a Bengal Side Car under the palm trees while prepping themselves for the famous beauty pageant.

My local bar, I love it! Every thursday they have a great $10 Steak Night which is awesome. All my friends have their parties here - whether summer or winter. The open fire under the crystal chandeliers is beautiful, and they mix a mean drink! bring on summer!
