Kaye Sera's Bizarre
Editorial
At first glance the concept may appear to have been done before, but fortunately, it is impossible to be satisfied by a first glance. By day, this venue is home to Ms Sera's collection of bric-a-brac and knick-knackery which is peddled to passing customers. By night, whatever doesn't glitter turns to gold anyway, forming a backdrop of retro camp to Ms Sera's hostess charms.
For the uninitiated, let's be clear. Ms Sera is not all that she appears. As a doyen of Melbourne's drag scene, Kaye brings well regarded credentials to her intimate little cabaret-bizarre. The lady can indeed sing and she surely would dance if the tiny venue allowed more than a low-kick. The big buzz word of the noughties was burlesque and Melbournians caught on real fast, to the extent that the term has become generic, and we may find ourselves bore-lesqued by its mainstreaming.
Kaye Sera offers a sincerely underground experience that is raw, honest and performance-focussed in an era when tokenism has diluted genuine adventure.
