George Public Bar
Editorial
When you think, St Kilda, you usually think of the pubs - The Espy, The Prince and The George. No matter where you are in Melbourne, if you utter the words, 'I'll meet you at The George' there's no guessing where you mean. The George Public Bar has been serving cold beer and cheap grub for more decades than Melbourne has actually been here (that may not be true). If the building facade is anything to go by - what do they call it, ??rustic'? - the hotel is as old as the land itself. And by the looks of some of the patrons, they were probably here when it first opened.
With a charm all its own, the George Public Bar is all the noise and beer you've ever wanted in a no frills public bar. You won't get designer furniture or cocktails here; just cold beer, some wine for the ladies and a thrashing on the pool table. Anything fancier, and you'll need to head next door to the George Wine Room - it's pretty much a separate business. What you do get here is a reliable pot of beer and some loud rock'n'roll. Simple.
After descending a short set of stairs, the long, thin room runs the length of one wall, with the bar taking up most of one side. That's ok; there are plenty of chairs lying about, and the strangers here don't mind getting cosy. On a warmer day, take a seat outside of a weekend and settle in to watch the St Kilda wildlife walk by - backpackers out for a new adventure, street workers having a blue with their, umm, ?manager', or just the local cooler-than-Jesus crowd.
