George Lane Bar
Editorial
There are a few things you would expect to find down a bin lane off of St Kilda's infamous Grey Street. Used needles, condoms and possibly a mid-job prostitute are high on this list. If that's painted a rather grim picture of George Lane, putting you right off then sorry, you'll just have to man up, because the eponymous George Lane Bar is an outstanding gem hiding cheekily down said alley.
The latest edition to the now frankly sprawling beast that is the George Hotel - joined by its sisters the White, Public and Wine Bars - is by far the most enticing. This place feels like the naughty, glamorous speakeasy should. It's dark and dimly lit, with animal prints on the wall, lush seating that would not look out of place in the French royal court back in the day and deep red walls hung with curios. It's a fairly spacious palace too, considering its locale.
While the look is certainly fancy pants, the crowd is an eclectic mix of younger trendy sorts. Thankfully drink prices are pretty damn reasonable, so you don't have to be a king to afford a good night out. These guys shine at making cocktails, so treat yourself to something tasty, and you can grab Thai food to curb the tummy rumbles. Sunday arvos mean Salsa classes if you want to trip the light fantastic. However, I'd recommend being a lazy Grey Street tramp and settling into the sofas instead.
