While watching the sunset on the verandah with a drink in hand, you may decide you never want to leave Donovans. For 14 years this relaxed but professional restaurant has been the go-to place for Melbourne's cognoscenti and is a great restaurant to show off to out-of-towners. Designed to give the comfortable sense of dining at someone's (luxurious and amazing) home, Donovans features floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto the beach, an enclosed verandah and outside terrace, as well as a library and inviting lounge area with open fireplaces to retire to after dinner. The Cape Cod inspired dining room and stylishly attired, professional waiters ensure this refurbished bathing house oozes easy East Coast charm.

With the departure of founding chef Robert Castellani, sous chefs Adam Draper and Emma D'Allessandro have now stepped up to the plate, maintaining the modern Australian direction of the food while adding some individual touches of their own. Regulars can still expect classic stalwarts such as the old-fashioned chicken pie, its lid tipped to release the enticing scents of mushroom and tarragon; or the decadent signature dessert of Bombe Alaska for two. Other enticements might include creamy crab bisque with crispy soft shell crab; hand-made ravioli stuffed with Moreton Bay bug and prawns; or tea-smoked duck breast with cherries and a mini duck pie.

Seafood is the star here, with Sicilian-style swordfish served hot from the grill and old-fashioned fish and chips still a firm house favourite. Consider desserts such as a refreshing basil crème brûlée with spongy lemon madeleines or Sicilian nougat semifreddo with citron and cherries that give a light, spring finish. The wine list is extensive, with the international drops featuring a carefully selected wine of the month. The brilliant menu is indicative of the sort of experience to expect at Donovans. A meal becomes a memorable occasion at this comfortable seaside restaurant.

One of my faves for a romantic meal, Donovans has the food, the wine, the service and the view. The setting is so eclectic and cosy it takes the edge off what could otherwise be an arrogant venue. The private room and tasting menu is also superb for functions... pity they don't do weddings.
