Dogs Bar
Editorial
If you've lived in and around vibrant St Kilda, there's no doubting you've found yourself tucked away in Dogs Bar at some point or other. As much as the phrase is bandied around a little too lightly these days, this spot is genuinely up there with iconic status.
A glorious outdoor terrace featuring wrought iron railings gives way to a cosy interior with wooden floorboard and an open fireplace. It's the perfect spot to snuggle up on dark winter days. The atmosphere is decidedly unpretentious, both in terms of the local crowd and the knowledgeable bar staff. You can even bring the pooch along with no fear of condescending sneers. It's a real locals bar, and one with a real eccentric style all of its own.
The wine list is worthy, and not too expensive either. Food runs all day, from tasty eggs to start (including a hearty Breakfast pizza), right through to fantastic dinners coming in under $20 for the most part. The theme is Mediterranean for the most part, with an emphasis on pasta and pizzas.
Many of Dogs' locals are arty-types, with a big following amongst the writer set, including film and telly buffs. As such, the venue sports its own screening room, and is also a big supporter of the St Kilda Film Festival. So if you're an auteur wannabe, you could do worse than hanging out here. There's a swish private dining room and space for meetings too.
