MTC Sumner Theatre
Editorial
The Sumner Theatre is one of two performance spaces in the MTC Theatre, the other being the smaller, more intimate Lawler Studio. The MTC also presents productions at the nearby Arts Centre, in the Playhouse and the Fairfax Studio.
The oldest professional theatre company in Australia, the MTC was founded by John Sumner (after whom the Sumner Theatre is named) in 1953. The first Australian play produced by the MTC, Ray Lawler's Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, in 1955 was quickly recognised as an Australian classic. Today the company presents an average of 10 - 12 productions a year, often including both Australian and world premieres in its seasons.
Nestled next door to the Recital Centre and the Victorian College of the Arts, visitors to the Sumner Theatre can enjoy dinner before the show, or a post-show drink at Script Bar & Bistro. The menu is predominantly Italian in style, using seasonal produce that is locally sourced where possible, and the wine list is extensive, offering 21 different wines by the glass.
Treat yourself to a memorable night out at Melbourne's largest mainstage theatre company.
