The Australian Centre of Contemporary Art, known locally as ACCA, is one of Melbourne’s best-loved contemporary art galleries, and the only major public art gallery in Australia focussed on commissioning rather than collecting, with a particular nod to works best suited to ACCA’s impressive exhibition space.

Editorial

ACCA is housed in an iconic abstract building constructed out of 'red' rust steel, giving a clue to the contemporary focus of the gallery - and a visit is a must for anyone interested in the contemporary art movement.

Attracting works created by living artists from all over the world, ACCA exhibits and commissions new artworks by local and international artists and is at the forefront of Australia's challenging, innovative and creative visual art movement. While ACCA's current home is relatively new (since 2002), the gallery itself has been around for over 20 years, originally located in a tiny cottage in Melbourne's Botanic Gardens. A visit to ACCA is a journey to the heart of the contemporary art movement - and it's pretty much guaranteed that visitors will be challenged, inspired and excited by the innovative work on display. ACCA presents international and Australian contemporary art in five annual exhibition seasons throughout the year. Ranging from solo to group shows, the work aims to encourage dialogue around a broad range of artistic, social and cultural issues.

Located next to ACCA is one of Australia's most controversial and best-known works of public art, Ron Robertson-Swann's sculpture Vault. Known to most people as the 'Yellow Peril' the work caused public outcry when it was first commissioned in 1980. While the controversy has long since died down, 'The Yellow Peril' continues to foster dialogue on the value of public art and in doing so has found the perfect home at ACCA.
