A new direction for Chapel Street, with live cabaret, jazz and burlesque - and cocktails!

Editorial

Red Bennies adds a further layer to the somewhat single-layered cultural landscape that is Chapel Street, Prahran; a strip well known for its mainstream fashion outlets, designer cafes and bars. The arrival of Red Bennies in 2010 gives the area a cultural cache that adds a nice foil to neighbouring nightspots that mostly attract the twenty-something hip-brigade who have long ruled local clubland.

For Red Bennies, gone is the darkness that preceded it in the form of the infamous Viper Room, and the light has been let in. The once psychedelic haze that dominated the venue has made way for a more convivial experience, and the room now bounces cool jazz, hot funk and burlesque babes around its faux deco decor. A number of bars serve patrons fancy cocktails with fruity music while (after several of said cocktails) cosy booths and banquettes beckon romance. Rotating seasonal cabaret shows, bands and performances keep Red Bennies fresh and relevant to its jazz origins, while enabling sophisticated refuge from the victims of the Chapel Street swagger who dominate the footpath below.
