Mosq

Mosq is a little North African treasure tucked away in the back streets of South Yarra.

Editorial

Nestled amongst a small group of modern restaurants on Bray Street, Mosq is just one block back from the Jam Factory and Chapel Street. The venue has been beautifully decked out and actually does transport you to Morocco with its low lighting, glass lamps set back into the walls, handcrafted furnishings, and flowing curtains. There is even a deliciously huge day bed in the middle of the venue, covered in cushions where you can sprawl back to your heart's content and pretend you are some kind of African Queen.

There is also an outdoor sitting area in front for the hookah-smoking types. The views aren't exactly of Marrakech (these are the backstreets of South Yarra after all), so just have another toke of that huge pipe, close your eyes and dream of camels or cameros - whichever takes your fancy. For the full effect, especially if you're on a date, you may want to try Tuesday or Thursday nights when there is traditional North African live music playing and the occasional belly dancer.

The drinks menu is fairly basic but the food menu is much more exciting - definitely try the banquet options as these include samples of all their dishes. Overall, Mosq is stylishly casual and comfortable, the staff are relaxed and friendly; and keep it in mind for functions, which are their specialty. Oh, and the place is usually closed for private functions on Friday and Saturday nights, but you can call to book into the Chef's Selection Three Course Sunday Feast.
