Market Lane Coffee
Editorial
Market Lane Coffee is a wonderfully welcome addition to the bustle of Prahran Market. Occupying a glass-walled corner once inhabited by an organic food outlet, this light-filled space is a welcome way to fuel up for the fresh food shop ahead.
An airy haven with a real homey feel to it, despite a large floor space, Market Lane scrawls the origins of its coffees in chalk on large blackboards. They source and roast their own beans, and will even deliver to your door, with fairplay on the farm front and centre in their choices. I settled for a seasonal blend espresso that combined Brazilian Barreiro, Costa Rican Herbazu and the inexplicably-named San Franciso Tecuamburro hailing not from the Golden Gate city, but rather Guatemala.
It was a mouth-watering kick of acidic sharpness and sweet, sticky, goodness that did wonders for my palate, delivered in a dinky little cup complete with random teaspoon adorned with some British lord or other. More impressive still was barista Trent's ability to field my many rapid-fire questions while serving up cup after cup of roasted perfection.
Another twist that piqued my interest was the coffee fly filter - essentially a tasting paddle of three single origin filter coffees for $12. Now I hear you gasp at 'filter' and so did I, but apparently it's all the rage in Japan and done well offers up a perfectly respectable cup. I took Trent's word for it this time, but I'll be back to test them out.
