Editorial

Among the strengths of Seddon and its village atmosphere is this small restaurant, established by two women who used to own a shop in the area and worked in city restaurants before that. It looks attractive, but is low-key in its decor - bare tables, concrete floors, decorative tiles around the open kitchen, ropes of garlic and chillies hanging idly.

The food is mainly Italian, though for inspiration it expands to encompass the whole of the Mediterranean. The menu changes every couple of months according to what is in season, but the style is constant, imaginative and full of flavour. The Wagyu beef bresaola is exceptional, with silky slices of cured Wagyu on a velvety white bean and taleggio puree, topped with whole beans and crunchy grissini. The pasta dishes are also great: think tortellini filled with ricotta and goat's cheese with browned butter and sage. Main courses include some slow-cooked dishes and very good fish. The $28 two-course weekday lunch menu (or $35 for three courses) is exceptional value. On Sundays there is a Mediterranean “yum cha” - a succession of dishes with flavours from Italy, Greece and Spain; sittings are at 11am and 1.30pm. The wine and beer selection is very well chosen and includes some lesser-known wines by the glass.
