Cool your heels before or after the game in the shade of the MCG.

Editorial

Tucked inside the shadow of the league's greatest arena, this pub made a sporting headline of its own when it was reborn from the foundation of the old Depot. The Precinct, as all Doggies' fans already know, is where rugged ruckmen retire.

Or, at least, one family of them. This is the new stadium for Footscray and Western Bulldog's royalty, The Darcy family. Defender dad David Darcy is on board here with son and former Doggies captain, Luke. With a clutch of other siblings, parents and offspring fleshing out the team, the Darcy family have proven that they can excel beyond the football field.

The Precinct looks exactly as one of the premiership's premiere pubs should. It looks, in short, like the AFL. It's glossy and lean and glamorous and democratic. It's loud and large and, at most times of the week, buzzing from the charge of handsome men who are over six foot tall.

Needless to impart, there's plasma screens here the size of a training pitch. Equally needless to impart, this place runs on the love of the game. Even in the off-season. This is exactly what you'd expect from a high-end pub that waves the footy flag.

There is, however, one great surprise: the food. A Mediterranean-Asian menu costs a little more than a footy Four 'n Twenty. But, it's rather good and will keep a bod in playing shape.

SM King, September 2010
