Booktalk

A bookshop with a cafe attached to it may not be a new concept, but generally the cafe is an afterthought. Not at this Richmond venue.

Editorial

Easily taking up half of the store, the cafe at Booktalk has tables running along the side wall right to the very back where an inviting couch awaits. The front of the shop is the display area for new and pre-loved books with customers encouraged to flick through the latter while tucking into delicious fare. Considering its size, the book selection is fantastic. It’s doubtful you’ll leave empty handed, and the money saved on a pre-loved book can then be spent refuelling in the cafe. Sit at wooden tables with chairs dedicated to famed writers such as Charles Dickens and George Orwell, or outdoors on bustling Swan Street.

Choose from the glass cabinet, filled with sweet and savoury delights, or from the large blackboard that dominates an entire wall. Start the day with a Booktalk breakfast of poached eggs, tomato, mushrooms and bacon with hollandaise sauce on sourdough washed down with a freshly squeezed orange, lemon and ginger juice. At lunchtime, feast on freshly made sandwiches, a lentil burger with garden salad, beetroot and hummus, or a gourmet shepherd’s pie. Finish with a deliciously light cupcake with a fresh strawberry on top and a cup of good coffee.

It's so nice to be able to flick through a couple of pre-loved books and decide whether to buy them or not over breakfast and a latte. They do a mean veggie brekkie here with eggs, avocado and grilled tomato, plus the coffee's of a good standard also.
